Scaling Sustainable Water Treatment: Stockholm Water Technology’s Journey

Image

Stockholm Water Technology is tackling one of the world’s most pressing challenges: water scarcity.

Through chemical-lean purification and reuse solutions, the company enables industries, municipalities and commercial users to treat water more sustainably.

Growing up in southern India, Karthik Laxman Kunjali, co-founder and CEO, experienced water scarcity. “We used to get water once every two or three days. So it was common for every household to have tanks to store the water and keep the house running.”

Founded on the vision of delivering cleaner, more efficient water treatment, Stockholm Water Technology developed a patented electro-capacitive platform that removes contaminants without chemicals or membranes. Its CAP3D technology can address de-hardening, heavy metals, nutrients and micropollutants in a single compact system, helping customers reduce operational complexity and environmental impact.

InnoEnergy support: “Industry interest changed the game for us”

A critical turning point for the company came through the EIT innovation ecosystem. Early engagement with InnoEnergy provided validation, strategic guidance and access to industrial networks at a formative stage. This support helped the team refine its technology, build credibility and reach its first large-scale commercial partners.

InnoEnergy’s involvement started even before the company was formally established.

They came onboard even before it was a company in 2017. They have seen us develop from when the device was the size of a palm to container-sized devices.

Connections facilitated through the EIT Community opened doors to major industry collaboration. Engagement with global water player Veolia, initiated within the ecosystem, significantly increased market confidence in the technology and accelerated adoption. These partnerships demonstrated how trusted networks can de-risk innovation for both startups and established industrial actors.

Agreement with DRC ChemTec as a tick mark for SWT’s scaling potential

A recent key milestone was the strategic agreement with Saudi-based DRC-ChemTec to deploy SWT’s chemical- and membrane-free water purification technology in Saudi Arabia.

The deal involves supplying 1,750 systems over four years to treat approximately 3.5 million litres of water daily, aiming to improve access to clean drinking water and wastewater for agricultural use. Since then, there have been ongoing discussions with companies from Chile, Japan, Korea, and India, which look very promising.

A future shaped by sustainability and ambition

Today, Stockholm Water Technology exemplifies how EIT-backed innovators translate advanced research into market-ready solutions with measurable environmental impact. Looking ahead, Karthik has a clear ambition for Stockholm Water Technology.

In ten years, hopefully we will be a brand that people recognise… we want to be synonymous with sustainability and growth.
