InnoEnergy-supported Skeleton advances in EIC STEP Scale Up selection

Skeleton Technologies is among six European companies that have passed the evaluation stage of the European Innovation Council’s STEP Scale Up call and been put forward for a potential equity investment of between €10 million and €30 million.

The European Commission announced the selection on 28 July 2026 following a competitive evaluation process. Of the 24 companies that submitted proposals, 17 were invited to interview with independent high-level experts. Six companies met all the eligibility and evaluation criteria and have now been put forward for investment decisions by the EIC Fund, subject to due diligence. If negotiations are successful, the companies may receive a combined €97 million in equity investment.

From EIT-supported innovation to European scale up

Skeleton Technologies is is one of the six European scale ups selected. The Estonia-founded energy-storage company develops high-power solutions based on its patented Curved Graphene technology. Its systems are designed for applications requiring rapid charging and discharging, high power and reliability, including AI infrastructure, electricity grids, mobility and other industrial sectors.

Founded in Estonia in 2009, Skeleton develops supercapacitor and SuperBattery technologies for high-power and mission-critical applications in which conventional batteries may not provide the required speed, power or durability. The company controls several stages of the production process, from the development of its Curved Graphene material to energy-storage systems and software.

InnoEnergy has supported Skeleton since its early development, including through investment, business-development assistance and access to industrial partners, institutions and potential customers across Europe. The partnership has helped Skeleton develop its technology, strengthen its commercial network and grow from an early-stage deep-tech company into a European scale up.

Skeleton has emphasised the importance of this wider network to its development:

Apart from the monetary support, what has helped us a lot is the network that the EIT and EIT InnoEnergy has provided to us: the network of experts, the contacts with different companies, the experience.

Dr Sebastian Pohlmann, Vice-President for Automotive and Business Development at Skeleton Technologies.

Supporting Europe’s strategic technologies

The EIC STEP Scale Up scheme provides investments of between €10 million and €30 million per company. It aims to attract private co-investment and support financing rounds of between €50 million and €150 million or more, addressing a gap in the funding available to scale breakthrough innovations in Europe.

The scheme targets digital technologies, clean and resource-efficient technologies, including net-zero technologies, and biotechnologies. The six companies selected in this round are developing strategic technologies in areas including energy storage, laser communications, battery recycling, low-carbon construction materials, sovereign computing and AI inference.

Skeleton’s progression through the STEP Scale Up evaluation marks a further stage in the growth of a company supported by InnoEnergy.
