EIT Health and BioPhoT Strengthen Collaboration to Advance Health Innovation in Latvia and Europe
EIT Health and BioPhoT, Latvia’s nationally funded initiative supported by the Ministry of Economics, have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in Riga to strengthen collaboration in health and life-science innovation. The collaboration is supported by the EIT Community Hub Latvia.
About BioPhoT and EIT Health
BioPhoT is a national initiative supported by the Latvian Ministry of Economics, with dedicated public funding to accelerate the commercialisation of research in priority areas for health innovation. These include biomedicine, medical technologies, pharmaceuticals, and photonics-enabled solutions. Through national investment and international collaboration, Latvia aims to support the development of export-ready innovations with sustainable economic and societal impact across Europe.
EIT Health is a leading European health innovation network, supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), that connects around 80 partner organisations with startups and entrepreneurs across research, education and business. Its work addresses urgent public health needs, strengthens health systems, and bolsters the continent’s competitiveness in the global economy.
Supporting Latvian Innovators
Under the MoU, which was signed during BioPhoT Industry Day in Riga, BioPhoT and EIT Health will jointly explore opportunities to support Latvian innovators. This includes facilitating connections, exchanging information, and creating clear participation pathways within EIT Health activities and the wider European health innovation ecosystem.
BioPhoT is open to collaboration with industry partners across Europe, enabling Latvian research teams to engage with real-world challenges in health and medical technologies and align solutions with market needs from an early stage.
This collaboration creates mutual value: Latvian innovators gain access to industry and expertise, while EIT Health strengthens its connection to a dynamic and fast-growing ecosystem committed to delivering impactful health solutions for Europe.

It builds on previous EIT Community initiatives in the country, including EIT National Day 2025, held in October 2025. Together, these efforts sit within a broader record of EIT engagement in the country: between 2021 and 2024, Latvia attracted €8.1 million in EIT funding, supporting the growth of 215 startups and ventures.
